Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed.  And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”  John 8:31-32

If knowing the truth makes us free, what are we freed from?  We are free from a life of captivity to the effects of sin.  Jesus tells us He came to earth to …  “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor, He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”  Luke 4:18-19

Every person born, is born in sin and its effects because of the sin of the first Adam in the Garden.  We are all born of that sinful lineage.  Jesus came that we might be redeemed to the lineage of our Heavenly Father.  As we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we are adopted into the family of Christ, but some of the consequences of sin are still present in our lives.  Through learning God’s ways, through His word, we can be free and walk in the full victory and destiny He purposed for us from the beginning.

Receiving Freedom is a process that must be worked into our lives over time and not a dramatic “quick fix.”

Freedom begins with receiving Jesus.  John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”  Then, we read in 1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

God wants us to be free, but his goal is not to just set us free.  His goal is to conform us into His image (Romans 8:29).  Receiving Freedom is a process that must be worked into our lives over time and not a dramatic “quick fix.”
